Utah State gymnast Nyla Morabito has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending March 8, according to a statement released on Mar. 9. The award is determined by a state-wide media panel.
The recognition marks Morabito’s first time receiving this honor during the current year and the second time in her career. America First Credit Union sponsors the student-athlete of the week program and donates funds to support student-athlete scholarships.
Morabito, a junior from Welland, Ontario, Canada, secured three event titles last week as Utah State achieved a 2-0 record. The team recorded a 196.875-195.725 win at Southern Utah and a 196.650-196.150 home victory against No. 25 Oregon State. The score at Southern Utah was the third-highest in program history, while the home score against Oregon State was also among the top performances for Utah State.
During competition against Southern Utah, Morabito shared the vault title with a career-high score of 9.875 and tied for second on floor with a season-high 9.875. In the meet against Oregon State, she again shared the vault title by matching her career high and won the floor title with another career-best performance.
Utah State (15-4, 4-2 Mountain West) will conclude its regular season on Sunday, March 15 at the Arizona State Tri Meet alongside host Arizona State and Southeast Missouri.
Nominees from other sports for this week’s award included Mason Falslev (men’s basketball), Elise Livingston (women’s basketball), Chase Goetschel (golf), Jazmin Ramirez (softball), and Jean-Baptiste Badon (men’s tennis).
