Utah State University gymnast Olivia Orengo has been selected as the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending February 22. The honor, which is determined by a state-wide media panel, marks Orengo’s first time receiving this recognition.
America First Credit Union supports student-athletes by providing direct funding for scholarships through its sponsorship of the weekly award.
Orengo, a sophomore from Rogers, Minnesota, played a key role in Utah State’s recent victory over Boise State. She won two event titles and contributed to the team’s season-high score of 196.325-194.950 in their Mountain West home meet. This team score is now ranked as the ninth-highest home score in program history. During the meet against Boise State, Orengo tied for first place on bars with a score of 9.875 and secured first place on balance beam with another 9.875. She also finished tied for fourth on floor exercise with a score of 9.825.
For the current season, Orengo is ranked second in the Mountain West Conference and ninth in the North Central Region on bars with a National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 9.850; she is tied for 55th nationally in that event. On balance beam, she holds fifth place in the conference and is ranked 22nd regionally with an NQS of 9.800. On floor exercise, she ranks eighth in the conference and 30th regionally with an NQS of 9.820.
Utah State will remain at home for its next competition, hosting Air Force on Friday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m.
Other nominees for this week’s USU Student-Athlete of the Week included Mason Falslev from men’s basketball, Rachel Wilson from women’s basketball, Grace Matej from softball, Roman Venger from men’s tennis, and Terezia Mlkva from women’s tennis.
The list of past recipients for this academic year includes athletes from football, volleyball, soccer, track and field, basketball, and gymnastics.
