Utah State head football coach Bronco Mendenhall announced on Apr. 1 the hiring of Michael Frisina as the Aggies’ special teams analyst.
The appointment is significant for Utah State’s football program, aiming to strengthen its special teams performance with an experienced addition to the coaching staff.
Mendenhall said, “Michael brings a strong understanding of special teams and a detailed, disciplined approach that fits exactly how we want to build this phase of our program. He has worked in multiple systems and under two of my former players in assistants Kelly Poppinga at Boise State and Vic So’oto at Cal. He understands the importance of field position and his experience, work ethic and ability to connect with players make him a great addition to our staff.”
Frisina joins Utah State after two seasons at California as an assistant special teams coach, where he helped guide the Golden Bears to consecutive bowl games. During his tenure at Cal, punter Lachlan Wilson set a school record with a career average of 44.9 yards per punt.
“I’m incredibly grateful to Coach Mendenhall for giving me the opportunity to be here at Utah State,” Frisina said. “It’s an honor to join such a respected program. I’m looking forward to working alongside the talented staff and players.”
Frisina previously held roles at Oregon State in 2023 as a special teams quality control analyst—helping lead units ranked among national leaders—and Boise State in 2022, where he contributed to team successes including appearances in championship games and bowl matchups while mentoring award-winning specialists.
His coaching career began with positions at UC Davis, UNLV, Stanford, and Fresno State following his playing days as a placekicker for Boise State from 2011-2012.
The hiring reflects Utah State’s ongoing efforts under Mendenhall’s leadership to build competitive depth across all phases of its football program.
