Utah State men’s tennis earned a 4-0 victory over Nevada on March 22, marking its second consecutive sweep to open Mountain West conference action at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club.
The result moves Utah State to a 2-0 record in conference play. The team set an early pace in doubles, with Xavier Calvelo and Jakub Medved winning their match 6-2 at the top spot. Jean-Baptiste Badon and Dmitri Goubin followed with a narrow 7-5 win at court two, securing the doubles point for Utah State. The third doubles match was tied at six games each when it was left unfinished.
In singles competition, Utah State maintained momentum by taking the first set on all six courts. Medved clinched his singles match first with a straight-set victory of 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Eliot Nobel extended the lead by winning his match at No. 4 singles, and Roman Venger secured the clinching point for Utah State with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles.
Several matches were abandoned once Utah State had clinched overall victory: Badon led his opponent one point from victory; Calvelo was ahead after one set and in a tiebreaker; Goubin’s match was even in its third set when play stopped.
Utah State will conclude its three-match home stand against Portland State on Tuesday, March 24, also held at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club.
