Utah State softball lost both games of a doubleheader against Boise State on April 8 at LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field, with scores of 11-6 and 13-2. The Aggies now hold a record of 16-23 overall and 5-9 in Mountain West play.
The results are significant as they affect Utah State’s standing in the conference and highlight areas for improvement ahead of their next series. In the first game, Utah State fell behind early after allowing three runs in the first inning. Despite out-hitting Boise State 12-9, the Aggies could not capitalize on their opportunities while Boise State hit four home runs.
Senior catcher Grace Matej helped put Utah State on the board in the second inning, followed by freshman infielder Kate Vance’s RBI single. The Aggies narrowed a six-run deficit with two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings from freshman outfielder Faith Kroening and senior outfielder Kya Pratt. However, Boise State secured its lead with four more runs in the seventh inning. Senior infielder Alex Bunton hit her sixth home run of the season for Utah State’s final run.
In pitching, senior Rylie Pindel threw three innings allowing five earned runs before freshman Jordyn Lish finished with another five earned runs over four innings.
In game two, Utah State scored twice in the first inning through Bunton’s two-RBI single but struggled offensively afterward. Boise State regained control quickly, adding multiple runs across several innings including an eight-run sixth that ended the game after six frames due to run rule regulations. Freshman Kendall Cochran started for Utah State before being relieved by seniors Carly Limosnero, Pindel, and Sydney Saldaña.
Looking ahead, Utah State will travel to Las Vegas for a two-game conference series against UNLV scheduled for April 11 and April 12.
