Utah State track and field earned 42 team points and two silver medals on May 15 during the second day of the 2026 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Clovis, California.
The event is significant for Utah State as athletes achieved notable individual performances, including a school top-10 result, contributing to strong team standings. The Aggie men are currently in second place with 54 points while the women hold sixth place with 19 points.
Graduate Logan Garnica secured a silver medal in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:39.66. This marked his first career Mountain West medal at the outdoor championships after previously earning second-team honors in cross country. In the same event, teammates Garrett Woodhouse, Bryce Hill, and Michael Amitava Maiorano finished fourth through sixth respectively. Wyoming’s Ryker Holtzen won the title.
Senior Javin Richards began Friday by winning silver in the men’s decathlon with a total of 7,254 points. Richards set a personal best in the hurdles and claimed first place in pole vault among other strong finishes. Colorado State’s Mateo Munoz took gold in this event.
Other notable performances included freshman Karina Cooper placing fourth and sophomore Sabrina Fairbanks tying for sixth in women’s pole vault—Cooper’s clearance of 4.13 meters was both a personal best and third all-time at Utah State for that event. Junior Shelby Jensen placed fifth in the women’s steeplechase while Joseph Turner finished seventh in men’s shot put with a personal-best throw on his final attempt.
In sprint events preliminaries, several Aggies advanced to finals including Diego Aguirre-Stewart and Mathew Hall posting top times in men’s 400 meters; three sprinters qualifying for men’s 100-meter final; Claire Petersen qualifying fourth overall for women’s hurdles; Shay Jones advancing to women’s 400-meter final; and Joshua Armstrong along with Ethan Peterson moving forward to men’s 1,500 meters final.
Competition continues Saturday with additional field event finals such as discus, pole vault, high jump as well as track relays starting at 6:35 p.m., streamed live on Mountain West Network.
