Utah State University’s women’s basketball team is entering the final stretch of its regular season with a home game against New Mexico on February 25, followed by an away matchup at Boise State on February 28. Both games are part of the Aggies’ efforts to secure momentum ahead of the Mountain West Tournament.
This season, Utah State has experienced notable performances, including two players achieving double-doubles in a single game at San Jose State. Senior guard/forward Jamisyn Heaton contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds, while senior forward Rachel Wilson added 13 points and 10 rebounds for her first Division I double-double. The team previously had multiple double-doubles earlier in the season against San Jose State.
The Aggies are among four Mountain West teams to have multiple games this season with more than one player recording a double-double. Nationally, only 64 programs have accomplished this feat in multiple games.
Utah State has faced challenges with injuries throughout the season. Senior guard Marina Asensio was sidelined early in conference play after strong showings in scoring and assists. The team also lost leading rebounder Sophie Sene for the year and played stretches without leading scorer Aaliyah Gayles.
On defense, Utah State ranks fourth in the Mountain West for three-point field goal percentage allowed during conference play, holding opponents to under 30 percent from behind the arc. The Aggies have held their opponents to less than or equal to 30 percent shooting from three-point range in twelve games this season.
Offensively, when Utah State scores at least 65 points, they have won six out of nine such games. Conversely, they have not won any of their seventeen games where they failed to reach that threshold. The team is also more successful when making at least 30 percent of their three-point attempts or winning the rebounding battle.
Utah State currently averages just over fifteen fouls per game—second fewest in program history—and limits opponents to an average of fifteen free throw attempts per contest.
In terms of historical matchups, Utah State trails New Mexico in their series but last defeated them at home in Logan in 2016. The upcoming game will be their final meeting as conference rivals before Utah State moves to the Pac-12 next season. Against Boise State, USU has not won since a home victory in February 2022.
From the free throw line, Utah State ranks third during league play with a conversion rate above seventy-five percent and features five players shooting better than seventy percent on at least thirty attempts each—tied for best in the Mountain West alongside Boise State.
The Aggies’ roster is majority international this year with eight players from outside the United States out of fourteen total—a first for the program—with four hailing from Spain.
Notable individual performances include Aaliyah Gayles’ career-high twenty-four points against Grand Canyon and Munoz Herreros becoming just the eighth freshman in program history to shoot perfectly on at least three three-pointers in a game.
The team also set several records during its win over Stanislaus State: forcing thirty-six turnovers (a new program mark), having nine different players hit a three-pointer (first time ever for a Mountain West team), and tying its record for most threes made (fourteen).
Looking ahead, Utah State will host Nevada on March 3 for Senior Day before preparing for the Mountain West Tournament starting March 7.
